Chantelle Whitney Brown-Young, better known as Winnie Harlow, was a contestant on cycle 21 of ANTM in 2014. She was originally the second model eliminated, and placed thirteenth. She later won the Comeback Series, and rose to sixth place.

Since the show, she has gone on to be one of, if not the most successful and most well known contestant in ANTM history.

Early Life[]

Chantelle was born on July 27, 1994, in the Greater Toronto area, the daughter of Lisa Brown and Windsor Young.[1] She is of Jamaican descent and has two sisters.

She was diagnosed with the chronic skin condition vitiligo, characterized by depigmentation of portions of the skin, at the age of four. She was a victim of bullying by other children and was reportedly called a "cow, zebra, and all manner of other disparaging slurs" throughout her childhood by students both black and white. The verbal harassment led to her changing schools numerous times and dropping out of high school, after which she contemplated suicide.

Her first break arrived when YouTube personality Shannon Boodram saw her Facebook pictures and asked to shoot her for a music video.[2][3] She was personally scouted by Tyra for the show after discovering her on Instagram.

ANTM[]

Tyra stated during auditions that she would be just as hard on Chantelle as she would the other models, and gets no special treatment for her vitiligo. She was the first model called to the final cast.

In episode four, she received a weave at makeovers that Miss Jay referred to as the greatest weave in Top Model history. However, she was seen as too cocky at the optical illusion photoshoot, and Tyra noted that her look would be very common without her vitiligo. She was put in the bottom two with Kari, and eliminated.

Right after Denzel's elimination in episode nine, Ben and Chantelle were revealed to have the highest fan scores in the Comeback Series. Chantelle was declared the winner after a cliffhanger.[4] Immediately after returning, her overconfidence rubbed the house the wrong way, namely Lenox. She later won the slaughterhouse challenge and the first call-out for the HIV awareness shoot.

She is perhaps best known for her feud with Yu Tsai in episode twelve. During the MCM bag photoshoot, Yu calls her a panda, which offends her. At panel, Miss Jay asks if she changed her hair and makeup during the shoot, which she denied. She later placed in the bottom two due to being too in control, and was saved over Raelia with a 0.04 point difference.

In episode thirteen, Lenox, Will and Shei call her out for her lying about the hair and makeup change. She later confronts Yu after the Jinny Kim shoot and tells him that it would be a bad influence to the youth. Yu defends himself by saying he called her a panda out of love.[5] Later, Shei told Keith that she said the two hooked up. Keith confronted her about it, and she left the room in tears. She was in the bottom two again with Adam, and eliminated for the second time.

She has worked with Spanish clothing brand Desigual and became its official brand representative.[8] She also modeled for the H&M Forever Summer Collection, Bloomingdale's, Swarovski Crystaldust Crew, Nike Air VaporMax, Volkswagon T-Roc, Marc Jacobs x Julie Verhoeven, Tommy Icons by Tommy Hilfiger, Byblos, Saks Fifth Avenue and Moschino.[9]

In September 2014, she walked and closed for the clothing brand Ashish for its spring/summer 2015 collection at London Fashion Week. In November, she spoke at a TEDx presentation, recalling her experience with her vitiligo.[10]

At the 2018 Canadian Grand Prix, Harlow was invited to wave the checkered flag, signifying the end of the race. A miscommunication between race officials led to her being instructed to wave the flag on what should have been the penultimate lap of the race. As a result of the application of the Formula One sporting regulations, the final result was declared based on the positions at the end of lap 68 (i.e., the official race distance was shortened by two laps from the scheduled distance of 70 laps). The error did not seriously impact the race result.[11]

She walked in the 2018 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.[12][13] She collaborated with Kim Kardashian for the KKW x Winnie Harlow collection, which includes a twelve-pan eye shadow palette, three lip glosses and two highlighters.[14][15][16]

Acting & Television[]

In 2016, she appeared in a Sprite Commercial,[17] and she was a Team Captain on "Wild 'N Out". She was on "Good Morning America", "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon", "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" and "Watch What Happens Live". She was the guest judge for the Madonna Rusical episode of "RuPaul's Drag Race" season twelve.[18][19] She was also been a guest judge on the first season of "Legendary".[20] She was one of the main judges on the second season of the Amazon Prime Exclusive series "Making The Cut" in 2021.[21][22]

She played Sia in the music video for "Guts Over Fear" with Eminem.[23] She made a cameo in Beyonce's "Lemonade" visual album,[24][25] and was in Calvin Harris & Sam Smith's "Promises",[26] and The Black Eyed Peas "#Whereisthelove".[27] She was in a YouTube video of Lilly Singh (a.k.a. Superwoman) named "Three Girls, One Elevator", which also featured Zendaya.[28]

Controversy[]

In 2015, Harlow defended fans who painted their skin dark in tribute photos of her.[29] In 2016, she was involved in drama with Australia's Next Top Model, cycle 8 alumni Duckie Thot. She made fun of a campaign featuring Thot's natural hair, comparing it to cauliflower, which caused a social media backlash.[30][31][32] In 2017, she got backlash for fat-shaming a man on her Instagram.[33] In 2019, she was ridiculed by fans after complaining about flying in coach.[34][35][36]

Legacy[]

Harlow was presented with the 'Role Model' award at the 2015 Portuguese GQ Men of The Year event. She was named one of the BBC's top 100 Women in 2016.[37]
